The main goal of the Young Expert Programmes (YEP), consisting of YEP Water, YEP Agrofood, YEP Energy and YEP Tailor-made, is to offer young Dutch and local professionals the opportunity to take their first steps in an international environment. They are employed through Dutch organisations in a number of eligible countries. The programmes aim to rejuvenate the water, agrofood and renewable energy sectors and ensure the continued availability of expertise for these sectors.

The YEP Programmes are carried out jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP), the Food & Business Knowledge Platform and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency.

YEP Role

My assignment as Young Expert was at a sanitation project in Tamatave – Madagascar which objectives were (i) to set-up a sustainable and affordable desludging service for popular neighbourhoods, (ii) to design and build a cost-efficient sludge treatment plant, (iii) to support local authorities in the monitoring and improvement of sludge management facilities. I’m responsible of all technical activities within this project.

The studies and experiences I have followed helped me to have the followings skills:

Latrine emptying systems (design tools, operations)
Infrastructure works (design, drawing and implementation)
Training (latrine workers, local authorities)

Design and modeling gravity fed water network
Design irrigation network and infrastructures (dam, canal…)

Environmental assessments (use of LCA method)

Education: MSc in Civil Engineering, Energy and Environment – LaReunion University: 2011. Theme of thesis: “Environmental assessment and design of a drinking water supply system in Madagascar rural areas, using the Life Cycle Assessment method and the software Epanet”.

Engineer Degree on Hydraulic engineering – Ecole Supérieure Polytechnique d’Antananarivo Madagascar: 2009. Theme of thesis: “Optimization of a network providing drinking water for 4 000 customers by the SIG and a gravity fed water network modeling software”

Project engineer – Fecal sludge management - PRACTICA Foundation - Madagascar: June 2014 – present

  • To design tools for extraction and transportation
  • To develop an efficient organization of desludging service
  • To design and build a sludge treatment plant (200m³/month)
  • To support local authorities in the monitoring and improvement of sludge management facilities

Independent Consultant - Water and Sanitation Project - Madagascar: January 2013 – May 2014

  • Participate in feasibility studies of “Drying Beds for Fecal Sludge Treatment of Mahajanga”
  • System and tools design of a desludging service for a city with 10 000 inhabitant
  • Design four gravity fed water systems and three dams for irrigation network

Rural infrastructure Expert - Projet de Soutient pour le Développement Rurale - Madagascar: Sept 2012 – Dec 2013

Supervision of the rehabilitation for 15 irrigation systems in Atsimo Andrefana Region.
