Mark van der Poel
Young Expert at aQysta - Malawi
YEP period 2021 - 2023, batch 23
As Global Agriculture Officer at aQysta Malawi, I aim to strengthen the knowledge of smallholder farmers on the cultivation of high-value crops to increase their income. Moreover, I support the team on the ground with expertise and facilitation. I also work on the adaptation and standardization of our agricultural training programs.
I am schooled in Environmental Science and specialize in water systems and sustainable agriculture. I often look for interdisciplinary methods of working. I am a team player, but not afraid to take on a leadership role. I have acquired skills in cross-cultural communication, system thinking, and data analysis and visualization.

Experience before YEP
In 2016 I worked for Cordillera Disaster Response and Development Services, evaluating a recently completed irrigation scheme on northern Luzon. In 2018 and 2019, I conducted a baseline study for Acacia Water B.V. on horticultural crops and irrigation around Lake Ziway in Ethiopia. Following this, I took part in a social movement for sustainable travel, a sailing think tank bringing smart climate solutions to COP25. And from 2020 to 2021 I performed country sustainability assessments in the coffee supply chain for Rainforest Alliance.
