Menno Jan Rietema
Young Expert at Meta Meta - Zambia
YEP period 2021 - 2023, batch 22
As a SMART Centre Manager, my role is to set up a third training centre in Petauke, Eastern Province. The goal of the SMART Centres is to assist local development by introducing and implementing Simple, Marketable, Affordable, Repairable Technologies. The focus area is water and sanitation with an emphasis on manual groundwater drilling. The ideology is to kick start self-supply for water and sanitation by training entrepreneurs and create market demand at the same time.
The SMART Centres in Zambia are founded by the NGO Jacana. They have a strong focus on training in entrepreneurial skills. The centre selects promising and enthusiastic people from the surrounding area, to help and guide them in setting up successful businesses. Training is not limited to water and sanitation, but also extend to small scale irrigation and sustainable smallholder farming
At the start of the work period, the training centre will be prepared for training and equipped with the right materials and tools. The manager is responsible for managing the selection of trainees, training, guidance and monitoring of borehole sites, manual drillers, pump installers and welders. Besides this, he will be responsible for leading a small local team to assist in the daily work.
