Nathan Hölscher

Young Expert at Independent Energy - Nigeria
YEP period 2020 - 2022, batch 19

YEP Role

Since January 2020 I am working for Independent Energy which is based in Haarlem, the Netherlands. Independent Energy designs and builds off grid, hybrid and grid connected solar and wind energy solutions for a wide range of applications. The solutions offered range in size from being able to power single households, to several megawatt energy plants powering cities. The biggest markets for us are in places where the power supply is either nonexistent, unreliable, too expensive or a mix of these factors.

Often, our projects materialize trough partners abroad, I will be working together with SOSAI, our partner in Kaduna, Nigeria. As a solar engineer I will be the bridge between the office in Holland and the SOSAI team in Nigeria. My role is one of communication and knowledge sharing as much as it is a technical one. I am responsible for creating a higher technical level of knowledge in the company, as well as finding ways to smoothly go from load audits and site specific circumstances, to a reliable solar system design that fits the energy consumption pattern of the customer. Aside from that I am also involved in the acquisition of new projects and possible financing structures of those projects.

Experience before YEP

Before my studies I did project based work on restauration of Land Rovers and other military vehicles, some times my own. I also spend a lot of time on the road hitchhiking trough Europe, North Africa and North America.

During my studies I spend time in Uganda, doing a research about social security among people with physical and mental disabilities followed by a five year stretch of time in which I moved to Northern Norway and eventually became the captain of a fishing boat fishing for Cod and King Crab. During that time I started my master degree at Utrecht university and did a research about labor migration from Eastern Europe to Northern Norway.
