YEP period 2019 - 2021, batch 17

Young Expert at VNG International - Myanmar

First position after YEP

Project Manager at VNG International, Netherlands

YEP Role

VNG International are experts in strengthening local government. Local governments play a key role in the provision of basic services including water, waste management, health care and housing. They have a profound impact on areas such as safety, food security, rule of law and women’s rights. This is how our projects contribute in a sustainable way to better futures for people, communities and countries.

I will contribute to access to safe drinking water and sanitation in the VNG International programmes by firstly working with all stakeholder to achieve each of the programme’s objectives. In Myanmar, water supply and sanitation is a major service that needs to be strengthened. Furthermore, I will work on the engagement between the State / Regional and township Development Affairs Organisations with their citizens across VNG Internationals projects. Sharing knowledge and good local governance practices in municipal water and sanitation service delivery is a key focus of VNG International, for which regional and national seminars and workshops are being organised. Thirdly, apart from the governance perspective (citizens engagement for quality services), there is a technical component of water supply planning and developing systems. I would like to gain more technical knowledge on water and sanitation, working in the field and thereby facilitate a more in-depth implementation of the programme activities. Moreover, my position in Myanmar would allow VNG International to broaden existing and find new synergies with other Netherlands organisations active in Myanmar, preferably with organisations that are part of the YEP network. Lastly, I will work on the professionalisation of the Yangon office and will work on business development in the region.
