Technical Advisor of Sanitation at Local Government of Lampung Selatan, Indonesia

YEP Role

In this partnership, my role is including facilitating the UPT* of Wastewater of Lampung Selatan which has been established just in 2017. That organisation will have crucial role in couple next years as the leading sector in term of managing the wastewater treatment in Lampung Selatan. However, the lack of quantity and quality is waiting for them as their main challenge. My presence here hopefully would support The UPT Team to develop the Sanitation Roadmap and to increase their capacities to deal with their responsibilities. One of the main goal addressed to this organisation is to launch the regular desludging service as their breakthrough. There will be a lot of preparations needed to start this programme, which will be my biggest opportunities, as well as to provide more contribution such as compiling the local regulation, strengthening the organisation, campaigning and implementing the programme.

 

Furthermore, to reach the good sanitation requires participation from entire departments and also have to work together. In Lampung Selatan, they have Interdepartmental Body, called as Pokja AMPL**, which is responsible for the sanitation sector including health department, housing and settlement department, community empowerment department, planning and budgeting board, and education department. The future of sanitation in Lampung Selatan lied on their actions and that’s why I also have to coordinate with those departments to ensure they are committed in work related to sanitation.

Experience before YEP

My professional career was started in 2015 by establishing our own company running in agricultural sector by providing farmer organic fertilizer. We conducted many demonstration plots to convince farmers to change their habit by migrating from consuming chemical fertilizers to eco-friendly agri-input. In this company, I had role to prepare campaigning materials and open communication with potential customers from outside Indonesia. During two years, the company had strong connection in international market. The highest success was that we could export our product for the first time to African market!

 

After having personal satisfaction, I decided to choose a new challenge. In my mind, in 2017, was to choose the job that directly could give contribution to my society. Then, fortunately, my colleague provided me information regarding a job vacancy as facilitator in sanitation programme. At the beginning of 2018, I started my new journey as technical facilitator to build toilets and septic tanks in rural area. Together with the local team, I led them managing the fund, building the facilities and the guidance, and assisting them to compile the report. I was really enjoying these moments; hearing problems from people in village, assimilating with their habit and also witnessing their expression while receiving the aid!
