YEP

The main goal of the Young Expert Programmes (YEP), consisting of YEP Water & YEP Agrofood, is to offer young Dutch and local professionals the opportunity to take their first steps in an international environment. They are employed through Dutch organisations in a number of eligible countries. The programmes aim to rejuvenate the Water & Agrofood sectors and ensure the continued availability of expertise for these sectors.

The YEP Programmes are carried out jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) and the Food & Business Knowledge Platform.

YEP period 2013 - 2015, batch 2

YEP Role

During my YEP time I was working as a Young Water Expert for Akvo. I was situated in Kenya to assist the local hub manager in his day-to-day operations. I became the FLOW expert in East Africa and gave workshops and trainings related to this subject.

Skills

I’m a practical and enthusiastic person. During my internships I had the opportunity to specialize in different aspects of water management and construction. I got experience with AutoCAD and Revit and can supervise small projects related to civil engineering. I’m also interested in the use of GPS equipment and IT (windows, linux).

Background

Nationality: Dutch
Education: BSc. in Civil Engineering at the University of Arnhem and Nijmegen (August 2009 - September 2013)

Experience before YEP

During my time at the university of Arnhem and Nijmegen I had the opportunity to get practical work experience in The Netherlands and abroad. These internships were all in a multidisciplinary work environment where different work fields came together. I worked on the following projects:

  • Thesis on the realization of a work island in the Caspian Sea for Witteveen+Bos. The main focus was making sure that the design of the island didn’t conflict with the rules and regulations concerning the maximum amount of particles per liter of water
  • Internship at Ballast Nedam International in Ghana, focusing on the realization of water treatment plants and the corresponding pipelines
  • Internship at Royal Haskoning focusing on the design of booster- and pump stations in 2D and 3D
  • Internship at Heijmans N.V. working on the preparation of different infrastructural projects
