YEP

The main goal of the Young Expert Programmes (YEP), consisting of YEP Water, EP Agrofood, YEP Energy and YEP Tailor-made, is to offer young Dutch and local professionals the opportunity to take their first steps in an international environment. They are employed through Dutch organisations in a number of eligible countries. The programmes aim to rejuvenate the water, agrofood and renewable energy sectors and ensure the continued availability of expertise for these sectors.

The YEP Programmes are carried out jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP), the Food & Business Knowledge Platform and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency.

YEP Role

I am currently the Business and Project Manager at Ghana Netherlands Business and Culture Council (GNBCC) in Accra, Ghana. Currently, GNBCC is one of the biggest Chambers of Commerce in Ghana with over a 100 members and our mission is to stimulate trade between Ghana and the Netherlands. This means that GNBCC supports all companies who have an interest in doing business in Ghana and the Netherlands.

As a Business and Project Manager, I apply my experience and expertise in supporting the projects which GNBCC develops and implements. GNBCC has a diverse portfolio with programmes in the creative industries, WASH sector and private sector development. We also work closely with the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Accra.

Experience before YEP

I started working as a trainee ‘Communication and Trade’ for the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Accra (EKN). During my traineeship, I created a blueprint for the social media channels of EKN. This assignment asked for a creative and hands-on approach to motivate the team to work together. I also introduced, planned and executed the first “Fuse it” in the garden of the Embassy, to create a blend of Ghanaian and Dutch culture for visitors to enjoy. During my work as trainee, I gained a first-hand insight into doing business in Ghana by supporting the policy staff Trade which got my interest ever since. The Embassy staff were satisfied with the achieved results within my traineeship and asked me to further develop their communication strategy as a consultant. Together with the team I successfully developed and implemented a communication strategy focused on the Dutch Aid-to-Trade agenda.

After this, I joined the team of INCLUDE knowledge platform on inclusive development in Africa. I worked as a Knowledge Manager on the project ‘New Roles of CSOs for Inclusive Development’ in close cooperation with The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and NWO-WOTRO Science for Global Development. As a Knowledge Manager I was both responsible for the development of knowledge products (policy briefs, research summaries, blogs and reports) as well as the knowledge exchange through organising conferences and expert meetings. Managing the project allowed me to work with various stakeholders (researchers, practitioners, policy makers) and finding a common ground amongst them, is an aspect which I thoroughly enjoy.

My previous experiences show that I am capable of working in various fields and connect to different actors, which enhances my work at GNBCC while working with the members from different industries. I flourish in a team with different perspectives, also the intercultural way of working is an aspect I am familiar with and enjoy. I see this YEP position as an opportunity to further explore my passion for entrepreneurship and grow further in project management.
