The main goal of the Young Expert Programmes (YEP), consisting of YEP Water, YEP Agrofood, YEP Energy and YEP Tailor-made, is to offer young Dutch and local professionals the opportunity to take their first steps in an international environment. They are employed through Dutch organisations in a number of eligible countries. The programmes aim to rejuvenate the water, agrofood and renewable energy sectors and ensure the continued availability of expertise for these sectors.

The YEP Programmes are carried out jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP), the Food & Business Knowledge Platform and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency.

Young Expert at WaterWorX - Myanmar

YEP Role

As a Young Expert, I work for a capacity building project called Mandalay’s WaterWorX with the aim to improve the overall performance of the Water and Sanitation Department, Mandalay City Development Committee (local municipality). Being a management trainee, I am tasked to support short-term Dutch experts who will be conducting training on water safety plan, water quality analysis, human resource management, data management, energy efficiency, leadership, utility bench-marking and creating enabling environment to develop water utility policy. By coordinating with the respective stakeholders, I am facilitating various training. I also lead post-training activities assigned by the trainers. At the same time, I am assisting for a pro-poor water supply project which is a component of the Mandalay’s WaterWorX.

Experience before YEP

Civil Engineer at Water and Sanitation Department, Mandalay City Development Committee (MCDC): I was assigned with various tasks such as supervising the construction of the wastewater stabilization pond and a medium scale on-site wastewater treatment plant, water quality analyzing, report writing, developing water safety plan, helping to solve complaints from the public in terms of sanitation problems and coordinating for training provided by foreign organizations. This has equipped me with required skills to easily understand the complexity of urban water and sanitation problems.
