The main goal of the Young Expert Programmes (YEP), consisting of YEP Water, EP Agrofood, YEP Energy and YEP Tailor-made, is to offer young Dutch and local professionals the opportunity to take their first steps in an international environment. They are employed through Dutch organisations in a number of eligible countries. The programmes aim to rejuvenate the water, agrofood and renewable energy sectors and ensure the continued availability of expertise for these sectors.

The YEP Programmes are carried out jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP), the Food & Business Knowledge Platform and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency.

YEP Role

As a Young Expert in my organisation, I am a change agent and I lead people to get out of the comfort zone and do more. My YEP role is to share with peers about my project progress, challenges and achievements so as to learn from each other as well as share knowledge. I am also a YEP ambassador in my country.

I am a team spirited individual with strong work ethic and good interpersonal skills. I don’t fear taking initiative to lead and direct my team. I believe in team work and passion for what I do. I am have an eye for details and can multitask to meet deadlines. I have a strong personality but I am mostly quiet, only talk when a topic interests me or if the situation really needs my input. I make friends not easily but establish deep connections when I make friends.

Nationality: Kenyan
Education: I am a certified public accountant in Kenya (CPA-K) and a holder of Bachelor of Commerce-Accounting Option. Currently I’m pursuing my MBA in Finance from the University of Nairobi.

Experience before YEP

Before YEP, I was working as the Commercial & Finance Manager for Homawasco- a water utility company in the western parts of Kenya under a partnership with Dunea Water company in the Netherlands. The partnership was working under a project dubbed ‘Timiza Usafi’ simply translated as Realizing Sanitation. My role involved instituting financial controls to minimize expenditure and get value out of every expenditure incurred. I also did day to day cash flow management to ensure that the company if financially afloat to meet its immediate and long term financial obligations.  My work also involved reduction of commercial losses by ensuring that meter reading is accurate and prompt as well as dealing with illegal connections to ensure that they are minimized.
