The main goal of the Young Expert Programmes (YEP), consisting of YEP Water & YEP Agrofood, is to offer young Dutch and local professionals the opportunity to take their first steps in an international environment. They are employed through Dutch organisations in a number of eligible countries. The programmes aim to rejuvenate the Water & Agrofood sectors and ensure the continued availability of expertise for these sectors.

The YEP Programmes are carried out jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) and the Food & Business Knowledge Platform.

YEP period 2017 - 2019, batch 12

YEP Role

As a Young Expert, I am working for SNV Ethiopia’s project, Gender and Youth Empowerment in Horticulture Markets (GYEM) as a project officer. GYEM is a project funded by Comic Relief and being implemented by SNV Ethiopia in the country’s two regions, Oromia and Southern Nations Nationalities and People’s Region. The overall objective of the project is to enhance women’s and youth’s social and economic empowerment through improved access to and control over assets and benefits in the horticulture value chain. The project partners with farmer’s cooperative unions to increase the income of coops with a focus on women. We actively promote household dialogues that keep self-initiated changes at heart to improve the situation of women in the horticulture value chains and support and facilitate employment and income generating activities for youth. Please, find some success stories in the project’s website above.
