The main goal of the Young Expert Programmes (YEP), consisting of YEP Water, YEP Agrofood, YEP Energy and YEP Tailor-made, is to offer young Dutch and local professionals the opportunity to take their first steps in an international environment. They are employed through Dutch organisations in a number of eligible countries. The programmes aim to rejuvenate the water, agrofood and renewable energy sectors and ensure the continued availability of expertise for these sectors.

The YEP Programmes are carried out jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP), the Food & Business Knowledge Platform and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency.

Young Expert at Waterschap De Dommel - Colombia

YEP period 2017 - 2019, batch 11

YEP Role

As an expert in the field of hydrology, I will be working for the Dutch Water Authorities at its Colombian partner organisation, the environmental authority CVC in Cali. I will do this in the light of the convenant the Dutch Water Authorities have signed with the CVC, which includes an exchange in knowledge, with a focus on the themes of governance, dike maintenance and wetland conservation. This last theme will be my main focus, with the Laguna de Sonso as focal point. This is the largest remaining wetland in the region, but under severe stress of sedimentation and contamination. With my knowledge of hydrology and from my work within Dutch water board De Dommel I will assist in this project for conservation of this important wetland. Part of this work will be modelling the Laguna de Sonso and adjacent Cauca river, and helping in structuring the project to make it possible to take action and to stop further deterioration of the area. Furthermore I will assist in other activities the Dutch Water Authorities will be conducting within Colombia, as also with other Colombian environmental authorities contacts are being established to exchange knowledge on water management between The Netherlands and Colombia.

Experience before YEP

Hydrologist at Water Board De Dommel:

  • Development and application of groundwater modelling instruments for quick setup of local and regional groundwater models
  • Consultancy within the organization on stream restoration projects, management and maintenance of the water system and on spatial effects on ground- and surface water of external plans

Thesis at Vitens, The Netherlands:

  • Setup of a hydrogeological model in GMS-Modflow to determine cause and possible measures against salinization of the Garyp well field in the Dutch province Friesland

Internship at Wayaká Advies, Bonaire:

  • Conducting research to determine the probability of salinization for a new irrigation scheme using treated wastewater, via modelling exercise and field tests
  • Quantifying water use in the new irrigation system, to define the size of a storage facility needed on site
