The main goal of the Young Expert Programmes (YEP), consisting of YEP Water, YEP Agrofood, YEP Energy and YEP Tailor-made, is to offer young Dutch and local professionals the opportunity to take their first steps in an international environment. They are employed through Dutch organisations in a number of eligible countries. The programmes aim to rejuvenate the water, agrofood and renewable energy sectors and ensure the continued availability of expertise for these sectors.

The YEP Programmes are carried out jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP), the Food & Business Knowledge Platform and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency.

YEP Role

Currently I am working as a hydrologist for the Dutch Water Authorities Hunze and Aa’s in Mozambique. In Mozambique I am part of the Unidade de Control de Cheias e Secas (UCCS) at DNGRH in Maputo. The UCCS is a national unit for flood and drought control, where models of river systems are build and used for flood risk warnings and for mapping of flood risks. In this way collection of knowledge and gaining experience in building and using models is facilitated.

My internship at Dutch Water Authorities Hunze en Aa’s took partly place in Veendam, the Netherlands and partly at ARA Centro in Beira, Mozambique. The internship consisted of building a simple hydraulic model of the river Pungwe in HEC-RAS and to explain the model usage to the employees of ARA Centro.
