The main goal of the Young Expert Programmes (YEP), consisting of YEP Water & YEP Agrofood, is to offer young Dutch and local professionals the opportunity to take their first steps in an international environment. They are employed through Dutch organisations in a number of eligible countries. The programmes aim to rejuvenate the Water & Agrofood sectors and ensure the continued availability of expertise for these sectors.

The YEP Programmes are carried out jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) and the Food & Business Knowledge Platform.

Nationality: Zambian
Education: MPhil in Integrated Water Management from Monash University in South Africa, 2016

Experience before YEP

During my Master’s study (March 2014 - April 2016):

  • I served as the Postgraduate Forum secretary and then chairperson in 2014.
  • I was also a research assistant for the Water Research Node from 2015 -2016. Much of my research was focused on gaining an understanding of fisheries governance on the Kafue floodplain fishery in Zambia to provide insights into why regulation of access and use of the resource was effective at some fishing camps and not others. I then suggested how effectiveness of governance systems for the fishery might be improved.
  • In my spare time, I volunteered to take part in community outreach programs run by the Community Engagement Department at Monash South Africa.
