The main goal of the Young Expert Programmes (YEP), consisting of YEP Water, YEP Agrofood, YEP Energy and YEP Tailor-made, is to offer young Dutch and local professionals the opportunity to take their first steps in an international environment. They are employed through Dutch organisations in a number of eligible countries. The programmes aim to rejuvenate the water, agrofood and renewable energy sectors and ensure the continued availability of expertise for these sectors.

The YEP Programmes are carried out jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP), the Food & Business Knowledge Platform and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency.

YEP period 2016 - 2018, batch 9

YEP Role

MDF provides training and consultancy to a wide range of organizations. Here in Accra, my fellow YEP-ers and I set up a centre from which we supported (agri-)businesses by developing a more sustainable business model and have better access to market and financial instruments. We tried to strengthen the internal (management) capacity of these businesses by offering several services; from training and business model support to advisory services and financing. During my YEP-period, I was the coordinator for the Inclusive Agribusiness Centre.

Experience before YEP

Project Officer Africa / Innovative Finance at The Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) – The Hague, the Netherlands (Jan 2016 – Aug 2016)

We worked on setting up the Kenya Innovative Finance Facility for Water, and the Kenya Pooled Water Fund, together with the Dutch Embassy in Nairobi. My role was supporting the team in writing the business plan, join scoping missions and general program management.

Business Development Manager at Cordaid – The Hague, the Netherlands (April 2014 – Dec 2015)

During my time at Cordaid, I worked on their social entrepreneurship agenda. In a partnership with Enviu, we set up the Social Business Incubator, through which we supported 8 social start-ups in several countries. As part of their management team, I was responsible for idea generation, screening, and supporting the implementation of these business cases, together with the entrepreneurs.
