The main goal of the Young Expert Programmes (YEP), consisting of YEP Water & YEP Agrofood, is to offer young Dutch and local professionals the opportunity to take their first steps in an international environment. They are employed through Dutch organisations in a number of eligible countries. The programmes aim to rejuvenate the Water & Agrofood sectors and ensure the continued availability of expertise for these sectors.

The YEP Programmes are carried out jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) and the Food & Business Knowledge Platform.

YEP Role

As a member of Young Expert Programme, I was working at Nakuru Water & Sanitation Company Ltd as a pro-poor Programme Co-coordinator heading the pro-poor unit, a unit established in the utility with support from Vitens Evides International. My main focus was improving the lives of the urban poor in relation to water and sanitation by investing in affordable, viable and sustainable technologies. My role includes among others: mapping out the low income areas and carrying out water & sanitation needs assessments, developing proposals for funding investments in the low income areas, overseeing the implementation of water & sanitation projects, developing and maintaining effective relationships with donors, partners and relevant stakeholders and providing capacity building support & guidance for staff & relevant partners to facilitate implementation of planned pro-poor activities.
Click here for more information about my project.

My sound and generalist training in Social work & Community development studies has allowed me to demonstrate proficiency in areas such as field research, community approach, community resource management, community needs assessment, feasibility studies, human rights lobby and advocacy and many others, making me that utility person crosscutting office skills that all progressive institutions, state, non-state, commercial and not for profit or all require. Besides, I am a dynamic team player, looking to gain proficiency in an environment where personal creativity and teamwork afford me the chance to become invaluable assets in the pursuit of the organization/institution’s objectives, while simultaneously guaranteeing personal progress.

Nationality: Kenyan
Education: My background is sociology, I hold a diploma in Community Development, Bachelor of Arts in social work and social administration and pursuing MA Community development in the last stages of thesis writing.

Experience before YEP

I always had a great passion of improving lives of the less fortunate persons.

I did my attachment at Lea toto programme an outreach of Nyumbani children’s home (a home for HIV infected children) in Nairobi Kangemi slum. I gained a lot of experience working with International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Kakuma refugees camp as a social worker. I worked with Lake Victoria North Water services board under a support organization carrying out feasibility studies and preparation of proposals for water and sanitation for funding by Water Services Trust Fund (WSTF) and implementing Community Project Cycle (CPC) projects funded by (WSTF).

In my current job with Nakuru Water & Sanitation with support from Vitens Evides International as a pro-poor coordinator, I have gained a lot of experience in working with the urban poor  implementing water, sanitation & hygiene programmes/projects with specific tasks to contribute to program planning, implementation & evaluation of projects activities with the aim of improving access & coverage to water & sanitation to the urban poor.
